This year, the Grade 3 classes did three painting projects, and each one was a little more complex than the last project. Our final project is based on the artwork of Emily Carr. We learned that she was a Canadian artist who loved to paint the beautiful old-growth forests of Canada’s West Coast. She was a unique woman who loved her animals and being on her own. She also loved teaching children and adults about art!
In this project, students focused on adding depth to their paintings. They did this by making closer objects larger and by making farther objects smaller. This could be seen in how thick the trunks of the trees were. They also mixed paint colours so that closer objects would be darker and farther objects would be lighter. They were given paint “recipes” to use when making lighter and darker colours but were allowed to use their own creativity to get just the right shade.

Through these techniques, students created unique and beautiful paintings of forest trees, in the style of Emily Carr. We hope you enjoy walking through the hallways near the Grade 3 classes and looking at the forest scenes that they have created!
