The Kindergarten Curriculum

As our students continue their learning adventures, we strive to provide environments and experiences to engage children in active, creative, and meaningful exploration, play and inquiry, even at an early age.

Academically, in Junior Kindergarten, students learn to master vowels and consonants through visual aids and hands-on learning games and activities. As a result, children are able to form blends and read simple words quickly. Worksheets are completed daily and complement the lesson. Students are placed in small reading circles based on their individual reading levels and they are taught to read with expression and self-confidence. In Math, students learn to recognize and understand number concepts. They are introduced to simple addition and subtraction, patterning, measurement, and money. Teachers use a variety of visual aids to reinforce each concept.

In Bible class, students hear engaging stories that point to Jesus and God’s plan of salvation. Students memorize weekly Bible verses and participate in singing and movement activities. Character building topics such as kindness, obedience and thankfulness are also taught throughout the year. Prayer is an important part of our day as we encourage students to take everything to the Lord in prayer.

Students participate in two hours of outdoor play each day as well as weekly Physical Education classes. They are taught the fundamentals of physical movement (i.e. running, balancing, throwing, catching, kicking and trapping) as well as teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Building on the foundation of Junior Kindergarten, we continue to develop the students’ skills and prepare them for Grade 1. Our program has a strong language foundation consisting of phonics, writing, and reading. Teachers focus on equipping students with a broad range of literacy skills. Reading levels are tracked and Senior Kindergarten students surpass established standards by midyear. They progress quickly soon after into higher levels, preparing them well for Grade 1.

As students gain confidence in reading, they are also able to extend that to writing. Writing lessons are integrated into all of our programs so students have multiple opportunities to develop a variety of strategies to spell words and write different types of sentences. By the end of SK, students are able to write simple sentences with proper structure and conventions. From daily journal writing to labelling pictures for their science discoveries, we strive to nurture them to become effective communicators.

Starting in SK, students are also introduced to cursive writing. The penmanship lessons not only allow students to develop their fine motor skills, but also improve their legibility, writing speed and spelling ability.

Our SK math program aims to build a solid foundation in number sense. Daily structured math lessons help students gain a solid understanding of basic concepts. Hands on math activities provide them with the opportunity to engage in daily application and problem-solving skills. Some of the concepts that we introduce in SK include telling time, identifying and adding coins, skip counting, adding and subtracting, learning the basics of bar graphs, and identifying 2-D & 3-D shapes.

A student’s spiritual growth is as important as their academic development. Our Bible program in SK introduces key characters in the Old and New Testaments. Aside from our daily Bible lessons, Christian values are integrated throughout our programs to foster a Biblical worldview at a young age. Weekly chapel allow students to come together to worship together as part of the loving Wesley community.

The aim of our physical education program is to provide opportunities for students to develop knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes toward active living. We have daily outdoor activities as well as music & movement time. Weekly gym classes allow students to play cooperative games and be introduced to the basics of some organized sports. It is our goal to make physical fitness fun while developing teamwork skills and sportsmanship.
