Police Officers Visit ELC: A Special Lesson on Community Helpers

Monday, June 9th, was a day to remember for our ELC students, as they received a very special visit from two officers in the York Regional Police. Our young learners have been exploring the topic of community helpers, and what better way than to bring those lessons to life than meeting real-life police officers!

The visit began with our younger students getting an up-close look at a real police cruiser. The excitement was palpable as the children explored the vehicle, asking curious questions.

The second part of the visit brought all the ELC students together in the cafeteria for a presentation from our guests. The room buzzed with excitement and awe — one student, wide-eyed, even asked, “Are you here to catch the bad guys?” Clearly, the children had some basic ideas about what police officers do!

Ms. Donkor warmly welcomed our visitors. The two officers began by asking the students what they already knew about police work. Answers ranged from “putting bad guys in jail for time out” to a cheeky confession: “I stole Daddy’s pencil!” The officers took it all in stride, smiling as they guided the conversation into a deeper understanding of their roles in the community.

They then introduced the students to the gear they wear while on duty. From their duty belts carrying tools like a radio, handcuffs, flashlight, and tourniquet, to their badge, keys, and iconic police vest — it was a fascinating show-and-tell! The vest was especially popular; many students tried it on and quickly discovered how heavy it really is.

The officers also talked about safety and when to call 911. We were so proud to see that many students already knew the correct number and when to use it.

During the Q&A portion, students were eager to ask questions. One particularly thoughtful inquiry was, “Why do you carry guns?” The officers responded with care and clarity, explaining that guns are used only in very serious situations to keep everyone safe, and that using one comes with great responsibility. They reminded the students that weapons are not toys and should never be handled by children.

To wrap up, the officers shared simple ways that even young students can help keep their communities safe — like always wearing a seatbelt and following rules.

As a thank-you gesture, the PK class created a  thank-you poster for the officers, recognizing their service and dedication to our school and the broader community.

As a special treat, every student received a community safety colouring book, a paper model of a York Regional Police car, and crayons. Teachers also received YRP keychains and pens as a token of appreciation.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to these two dedicated officers of the York Regional Police Department for taking the time to visit our school and for making such a positive impact on our students. It was an experience our young learners won’t soon forget!
