It’s always a joy to begin a new school year by welcoming returning families and getting to know our new students and their families. Our classroom has been buzzing with excitement as we explored our first theme of the year — Colours!
This month, our Senior Toddlers have been learning all about primary and secondary colours through hands-on activities, engaging books, and plenty of learning through play. We began our journey with primary colors, using Duplo blocks and control cards to match and identify red, blue, and yellow. To reinforce these concepts, the children matched colourful fish to their corresponding fish bowls. For those who were ready, the activity was extended — the children were encouraged to move the fish into a larger bowl, count them, and match them to the correct number. They had so much fun helping the fish “swim” back home!
Once our toddlers were confident with primary colors, we introduced secondary colors — orange, green, and purple. The book Mix It Up! served as our inspiration for this part of the unit. With curiosity and excitement, the children mixed two primary colors to create new ones, watching the transformation happen right before their eyes!
- While learning about orange, the children practiced fine motor skills with a color-matching stick insertion box, mixed colored playdough, and enjoyed an orange stamping activity where they watched colors blend together.
- To explore green, we used the light table and liquid rain blocks, and the children created a fun tissue paper frog collage.
- When it came to purple, the children helped mix and create red and blue in separate jars and used a dropper to transfer the colours. As they added the blue to the red, they were amazed as they watched purple appear. We wrapped up our purple week with a “purple volcano” science experiment — a highlight for many!

To wrap up the month, we reviewed all the colours together. The children were encouraged to sort the coloured bears into matching cups, drive the cars along the matching painted tracks, and sort magnetic objects into matching paint buckets.

It’s been a vibrant and joyful start to our school year, and we can’t wait to see what our curious learners will explore next!
