Wesley’s annual walk-a-thon has been a cherished part of the Wesley community for as long as our students can remember. As such, each year, it is quite typical to expect an elaborate kick-off. To stir the community up and to excite the students we might see teachers dressing up, there could be a silly video or an amusing skit – all lovingly coordinated and planned by our staff. This year, however, as you may have already seen or heard, the task of promoting the walk-a-thon has been passed to our ever-capable grade eights.
Just a few short weeks ago the grade eight media literacy students were given an assignment: promote our walk-a-thon. With a short list of goals, a fundraising target, and a healthy dose of effort, the grade eights did not waste a single moment. Contending for an opportunity to present during chapel, step one was to prepare a pitch for their teacher to assess. Who was their target audience? What form of media would they use to reach the community? What advertising strategies could be employed? The students had many things to consider in their preparation. When pitches were done, the deadlines were firmed up for each group of students. Videos, presentations, scripts, posters – our eager students took their project-based learning assignment quite seriously and their teachers were very impressed!

The outcome has been a joy to observe. Our school leaders: the talented grade eights, have proven their commitment to the school community! We are blessed to have such talented and enthusiastic students here at WCA! Heads up grade sevens, you might be up next year!
