For many years, the elementary division at Wesley Christian Academy has been blessed by annual visits from Earth Rangers, which describes itself as “…the charity that transforms children’s concerns about the environment into positive action.” One of their free outreach activities (courtesy of sponsors such as Honda Canada) is to visit schools. With the help of two dynamic emcees and “ECO”, the virtual Earth Rangers Communications Operative, our students were engaged in an interactive hour-long show.
This year’s assembly was particularly enjoyable for our students, as it followed a “Wildlife in Jeopardy” theme – focusing on animals that are endangered and some of the reasons why they are in this situation. Important information was shared in an interesting manner that featured various video clips about animals and their habitats, scientists in the wild, and information on protecting our animal neighbours! All of this was interspersed in between three rounds of “Jeopardy” and a recycling challenge.

There were also two animal ambassadors – “Sonic” the Barn Owl and “Drako” the Cayman Lizard – introduced in between the various interactive segments. Our wonderful hosts provided amazing adaptation information about each unique creature.

Throughout the presentation, the Earth Rangers encouraged our students to learn more about the environment and conservation. In addition, they emphasized the importance of how small actions such as recycling matter. They also shared resources on their website, apps and games to help students grow their interest in conservation. Before ending the show, they reminded everyone that they “…have the power to make a difference”. Indeed, as stewards of God’s earth, we do have that choice. May we be strengthened and encouraged to do so.
