This morning, representatives from the JK2 class opened the ELC chapel service with the pledges, the singing of O Canada, and the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer.
Miss Law led a time of musical worship with two energetic songs – “Everybody, Everywhere” by Jana Alayra and “This Little Light of Mine” (Listener Kids version). The children jumped into action as they sang along enthusiastically.
After welcoming the students to the first chapel of the new calendar year, Miss Law introduced Matthew 5:14, the Bible verse that her message would focus on. She asked the students to echo back the verse as she read each section out loud. She then dimmed the lights and lit a candle. It glowed brightly in the dark cafeteria. Miss Law explained that when we have Jesus in our hearts, we are like a candle that never stops giving light.
Next, she had three volunteers go to the front to demonstrate how to use a glow stick. The students enjoyed seeing the bright colours of the plastic rods. Then, they discussed what happens to glow sticks the following morning…they stop working.
When asked which they would prefer to be – a candle that doesn’t stop shining for Jesus or a glow stick that is only bright for a short time, the students shouted, “A Candle”.
So, Miss Law asked for three more volunteers to go to the front and she offered each of them a (flameless) candle to hold. The room brightened up. Miss Law continued with her message by explaining that it can be lonely for one candle to shine in the dark. Thankfully, when we shine, others can see how bright we are and we can point them to Jesus! Then, they can share God’s light and make the darkness brighter.
Miss Law then showed a short but effective video to reinforce her message. It explained how the moon does not emit light to brighten up the night sky. In fact, it reflects the sun light back to earth at night. God is just like the sun. He is the light and He loves the world. When we choose to be a light for Jesus, we reflect God’s love and light back to the world!
To close the service, Miss Law led the students in prayer, thanking God for calling us to be the light of the world and thanking Him for His guidance and love.
