Today’s ELC Chapel – January 16, 2026

The SK1 class led this morning’s ELC chapel service in the cafeteria. After representatives led the pledges, O Canada and the Lord’s prayer, Ms. Cheung and several other SK1 students led the musical worship. They sang two Jana Alayra songs – “I Wanna Do Right” and “I Will Trust in You, Lord”. Most of the students were familiar with them and followed the actions of the SK1 leaders.

After the songs, Ms. Cheung started her message time by asking the children to guess the contents of her bag. She eventually pulled out a plastic cup of ice cubes. When she asked the students how she could drink it, some talked about using the microwave but one SK student suggested “have patience” – which was exactly her topic today. She did that by sharing the story of Job though a short video. After watching the story unfold, Ms. Cheung reviewed it with the students, sharing that Job was blessed with many animals, servants and children. However, when the Lord took all that away, Job prayed honestly to God and told Him about his pain. Even though he lost his health, riches and his children, he did not abandon his faith. He knew that even though God’s purposes are not clear to us, he trusted that His timing and plans are perfect. Job was able to demonstrate patience and trusted that God knows best. In the end, God blessed Job with even more than the first time.

Next, Ms. Cheung led a short discussion about examples of patience in their everyday lives. Some students talked about being patient when they need to use the bathroom and it is occupied. Ms. Cheung also brought up examples about having patience waiting in line to go up the slide or waiting for a turn with a specific toy. To help students understand the concept of time and sensing what a one minute wait is like, she asked them to close their eyes. Then, she put on a video with a one minute timer. She asked the students to put up their hands when they thought one minute had passed. Some put up their hands quite quickly while others did so closer to the actual time. At the end, Ms. Cheung helped the children conclude that even one minute can seem long when we are not doing anything to fill the time. It was a good way to practice being patient.

Lastly, Ms. Cheung put on a song about the story of Job to bring everything together. She ended the service through prayer, asking the students to repeat after her as she thanked God for being patient with them. She also asked Him for help to show patience to others.
