Glimpse Into A Classroom: JK2 – Discovering the Factors of Good Plant Growth

This spring in JK2, we discovered our green thumbs as we researched and experimented to answer the question; ‘What does a seed need to grow?’  In our research, we discovered that seeds need just the right environment before they will wake up and begin to germinate.  The right environment included the right temperature, soil, amount water and sun.

After looking at the life cycle of a bean plant, we used bean seeds to set up an experiment to test what we had learned.

In all our pots, we planted two beans.

In the first pot we planted the beans in good soil, set it in a window to receive sun and watered it regularly

The second pot we planted the beans in good soil, set it in the window to receive sun but did not give it any water.

The third pot we planted the beans in sand, set it in the window to receive sun and watered it regularly.

The fourth pot had good soil, no sunlight but was watered regularly.

What we discovered:

Surprisingly, the first plant to sprout was the one with no sunlight!  It grew up fast but eventually withered away and stayed a pale yellow instead of turning green.  Our seeds with no water and the seeds with poor soil (in sand) never germinated.  Only the plant with the right temperature, good soil, sun and water grew tall with large dark green leaves.

After all this, our green thumbs were still not satisfied and were itching to get back into the dirt.  So, we planted some Daisies and Dutch Irises.

Next, we got a little crazy planting grass seeds to make grass heads.

Then had some fun giving them all a hair cut.

Our JK2 class really enjoyed learning about plants and seeing them grow from seeds to amazing flowers and greenery! We are thankful for the opportunity to experiment, discover and be in awe of how God designed everything in nature to work so beautifully together.
