This term, the grade 2 students have been learning all about Canadian money. To make money concepts more meaningful, students had the opportunity to step into the role of being shoppers! Using a local grocery flyer, each child enjoyed pure shopping freedom
as they selected any two items of their choice. Once their items were chosen, the students dug into their ‘wallets’ to identify the exact coins needed to pay. This activity brought much excitement, as our grade 2 shoppers were thrilled that they could ‘buy’ any items of their choice with their pretend money!

After mastering exact payments, we moved on to another important skill of making change. To practice, a special pop-up shop was opened right in our classroom – the Grade 2 Super Store! The grade 2s had a lot of fun role-playing as cashiers and customers. They took turns choosing items, paying with more than the exact amount, and calculating the correct change.

With their new skills, our little mathematicians are ready to shop in the real world – whether at a grocery store, farmer’s market, or perhaps the Grade 2 Super Store 2.0 one day!
