Over the month of March, the Grade 1A and 1B classes focused on reading! The students participated in a March Madness reading challenge, where they were encouraged to read chapter books in exchange for their names being put into a draw for a $10 Scholastics gift card. Many of the students stepped up to the challenge and finished many chapter books, improving their reading skills and growing their love for reading in the process.
To celebrate the end of our March Madness reading challenge, the students were treated with a special afternoon of reading at the “Starbooks” Café. They were given the opportunity to wear comfy clothes and bring their favourite stuffy to the reading event, and the students came to school full of excitement and anticipation.
After lunch, the Starbooks Café was officially open for business! The students were amazed when they walked in and saw that their classroom was transformed into a café. On the menu, each student could pick between reading a “fiction frappe” book or a “dark roast non-fiction” book. They were also tasked with recording their pre-reading and post-reading reviews of their new books.
While they read, the students were served a fresh cup of hot chocolate by their teacher baristas and were able to give their baristas tips by writing down contractions they found while reading and adding them to the tip jar.
The time soon came for the $10 Scholastics gift card draw, and the students were very excited to see who would win. We all gave a big drumroll and one name from each class was pulled out of a box. Congratulations to the two winners for participating in and winning the reading challenge!
The Starbooks Café was a huge success and though it is currently closed for business, we hope that the joy and love for reading continues to stay open in the hearts of each of our Grade 1 students!
