Here at Welsey, the students have been participating in a school-wide reading challenge, where they are encouraged to read chapter books to earn points for their class. Many of the students stepped up to the challenge and finished many chapter books, improving their reading skills and growing their love for reading in the process.
To celebrate this ongoing reading challenge, the students were treated with a special afternoon of reading at the “Starbooks” Café. They were given the opportunity to wear comfy clothes and bring their favourite stuffy to the reading event, and the students came to school full of excitement and anticipation.
After lunch, the Starbooks Café was officially open for business! The students were amazed when they walked in and saw that their classroom was transformed into a café. On the menu, each student could pick between reading a “fiction frappe” book or a “dark roast non-fiction” book. They were also tasked with recording their post-reading reviews of their new books. While they read, the students were served a fresh cup of hot chocolate by their teacher baristas.

The Starbooks Café was a huge success and though it is currently closed for business, we hope that the joy and love for reading continues to stay open in the hearts of each of our Grade 1 students!
