Glimpse Into A Classroom: Grade 6 Art – Still Life Drawings

One of the art programs that students are going through this year is learning about various art mediums, such as drawing, painting, mixed media, etc.  Within the drawing unit, students dove deeper into examining various sketching techniques and were given many opportunities to learn and practice things like how to blend the edges of an object to make it look round, how to shade an object to show various values of light, and how to include shadows.

Students started by practicing drawing a cylindrical shape, incorporating these various techniques into their drawing.  They then applied that knowledge to drawing an apple, including how to show the core light on the side of the apple that is reflected from the light source.  After much practice, students were ready to tackle the final project in this unit – designing and then sketching their own still-life.

Students were each given one apple, one banana, and a jar or container of their choice.  They then had to arrange these three objects any way they would wish on their desk, and then could begin sketching!  This meant students had to consider proportion to make sure their objects were the correct size in relation to each other, value as they considered the light and shading, and then draw the shadows that reflected from their objects.

Students did a fantastic job on these still-life sketches! Check out our Facebook page for more photos!
