Glimpse Into A Classroom: Grade 8 Math

The study of mathematics here at Wesley is always important. That might be because we, the teachers, know that math is a key that can open many doors. This year, we’ve extended our mathematics curriculum for grades three and up by introducing Spirit of Math’s mPODs – that is Math Problems of the Day (we don’t actually do one everyday, but ask your son or daughter and they’ll certainly have some examples to share with you).

The problems and strategies which are taught through examples, trials, and marked work help our students to develop essential problem solving skills and an even more in demand skill: patient problem solving! That’s right! These questions are far from straightforward, and by taking on these challenges, Wesley students simply must be patient, learn the process, practice the skill in changing contexts, and find that elusive final answer.

By the time our students arrive in grade 8, they will have developed an enviable set of math skills. In fact, take a look! Grade eight students are flexing their mathematical muscles. Factorizing, simplifying, finding and cancelling out common terms. There are some seriously demanding problems which would make some high schoolers turn away in fear! However, through nurturing patience in mathematics, taking the time to learn the fundamentals, and sifting through the endless strategies and approaches to problem solving, our students are prepared!

Thanks for reading! Oh, and I simply must share: I am very proud to be a math teacher here at Wesley!
