Glimpse Into A Classroom: Hatching Wonder- Our JK1 and SK1 Chick Adventure 🐣

This past month, the JK1 and SK1 classes embarked on an unforgettable learning journey through our chick hatching project. It was an experience that brought science, curiosity, and care to life right in our classrooms.

It all began with a set of eggs placed carefully into an incubator. From that very first day, excitement filled the room. Each morning, students eagerly gathered around to observe the eggs, wondering what changes might have happened overnight. Using a special light to candle the eggs, we were able to see tiny developments inside, an incredible glimpse into life before it even begins.

As we learned, it takes about 21 days for a chick to hatch. Throughout this time, we discussed what was happening inside each egg and connected our observations to our classroom learning. Students asked thoughtful and sometimes surprising questions, leading the Sk1 class to explore how different animals reproduce. We learned about oviparous animals (those that lay eggs), viviparous animals (those that give birth to live young), and ovoviviparous animals (a fascinating combination of both!). These conversations showed just how naturally curiosity can lead to deeper understanding.

As hatch day approached, there was a mix of excitement and concern, especially when we realized it would fall on a Sunday. Some students worried they might miss the big moment. Thankfully, Mr. Bailey helped set up cameras so families could watch from home. This thoughtful gesture allowed everyone to be part of the experience, even over the weekend.

Then came the moment we had all been waiting for. A tiny crack appeared on one of the shells. This process is called “pipping” and it was incredible to witness. Slowly, the chicks began to push their way out into the world. The classrooms filled with awe as students watched new life emerge before their eyes.

Along with our observations, we explored the life cycle of chickens and what chicks need to grow and thrive. This helped students connect what they were seeing in real life with what they were learning in their lessons, making the experience even more meaningful.

Our chick project also became a shared experience across the school. Some students from elementary and other ELC classes came to visit the chicks, joining in the excitement and wonder.

One of the most meaningful parts of this journey was saying goodbye. When it was time for the chicks to return to the farm, many students found it difficult to let them go. It was a gentle and important lesson in care, responsibility, and understanding that loving something also means letting it grow where it belongs.

The chick hatching project was a fun and educational experience for everyone in our classes. It helped us learn about animal life cycles, patience, and responsibility. Most importantly, it gave us a chance to care for and appreciate living things in a hands-on way and to reflect on the amazing ways God created life. It is an experience we will always remember.
