February is Black History Month. Many activities take place in schools and the city to celebrate and recognize the proud history of Black Canadians. Last week, our pre-kindergarten class embarked on a learning journey about this.
PK 1 participated in different activities to celebrate the excellence and achievements of some Black Canadians and African American Activists. We read books about Black Canadians and discussed how their words brought great transformation to liberate Black Canadians or African Americans.
The children’s favourite story was about Viola Desmond, a Nova Scotia Black Canadian who stood up for her rights and equality. The children were encouraged by her story to be courageous, use kind words and express their feelings when they are upset. They learned that words are powerful.
PK 1 also explored the culture and traditions of African Canadians. We had a display of musical instruments. They had hands on experience with African and Jamaican musical instruments. The children were put into groups to perform a tune to the song “One Love, One Heart” by Bob Marley.
They were also engaged in different activities such as creating friendship bracelets and trees with heart shapes to emphasize the underlying theme about respect, love and kindness for all.
