How did PK2 incorporate these two complex words into their daily learning experiences?
Well, let’s see!
Throughout the course of two weeks, the students were led on a positive journey with the intention to affirm themselves and others. As teachers, it’s always good to encourage students needing more guidance in sharing, caring, using positive words and generally being nice to each other.
As the students entered into the classroom, they were welcomed with an “affirmation station” and a “mirror talk” area set up in the dramatic space. These intentional places were created for encouragement, conflict resolution, self expression and to affirm themselves and their peers.
Throughout this experience, they learned the basic fundamentals about the necessity of using positive words. They also understood how positive words are impactful, powerful, and super uplifting. The phrase “Words of Affirmation” was introduced followed by the meaning which they repeated each day by saying…
“Positive affirmations are words we say to ourselves and others, to make us feel happy confident and strong!”
Flash cards and a variety of books and songs were used as learning tools. They wore affirmative word crown’s and shirts which were displayed on the wall, outside the classroom.
Instead of individual craft activities, we encouraged and incorporated group craft activities. As a group, they created an affirmation tree with their own affirmation quotes. They also created a friendship bracelet to be shared with a friend they do not play with on a daily basis. These experiences helped to enhance sharing, togetherness and cohesiveness.
Three of their favourite activities were;
- find the positive word stones,
- skittles experiment
- the blooming heart science experiment
The stone activity instructed them to select a stone with a positive word and state that word.
The popular skittles experiment taught about cultural differences and uniqueness. The unopened hearts opened up revealing positive words, when placed in water.
PK2 were eager to engage in activities that promote togetherness.
A “Domino’s Creation Activity” was provided for the students to unite their creativity skills. It was so great to see them share, problem solve and just have fun!
It was also a great opportunity to incorporate Black History Month and Chinese New Year. As always, PK2 did not not hesitate to dress up in a variety of cultural attire from different parts of the world.
We concluded this theme by talking about the hero within. While dressed as superheroes, we engaged in dialogue about qualities that make us special.
These amazing young “superheroes-in-training” brainstormed words like …powerful, strong, brave, confident and loved.
Mission accomplished!
