Glimpse Into A Classroom: SK1 – A Miracle Unfolding

Raising a Butterfly: A Journey of Growth, Wonder, and Transformation

Sometimes God gives us a glimpse of a story before we even know how it will end.

During the very first week of school in September, one of our students proudly brought a monarch chrysalis into our classroom to share with the class. As we gathered around in wonder, little did we know that this tiny gift from nature would become the beginning of a year-long lesson about growth, transformation, and God’s amazing design.

Fast forward to last month, when our Science Centre became home to “A Miracle Unfolding.” We welcomed 12 Painted Lady butterfly caterpillars into our classroom, and the excitement was immediate. Each pair of students chose a caterpillar to raise and lovingly gave it a name. From that moment on, our classroom was filled with curiosity, responsibility, and daily wonder.

Every morning, students eagerly rushed through the door to check on their caterpillars. Were they eating? Were they moving? Had they grown overnight? They carefully monitored their tiny friends and were always quick to let the teacher know when the frass needed to be removed so their caterpillars could easily reach their food.

As we explored measurement in Math, our caterpillars became the perfect real-life learning tool. Students measured them regularly, compared their lengths, and recorded their growth over time. Day by day, they watched these tiny creatures grow bigger and stronger.

Then came one of the most fascinating stages of all.

The caterpillars began producing silk and attaching themselves to the paper towel inside their containers. Students watched in amazement as they hung upside down in a J-shape before wiggling and transforming into chrysalides.

This stage sparked endless questions and wonderings. One student was especially curious and wanted to open a chrysalis to discover exactly how a caterpillar grows beautiful wings inside! This led us into a deeper study of metamorphosis and the incredible changes taking place. As much as science helped us understand the process, we also recognized that some things still leave us in awe. There are moments when we simply marvel at God’s creation and acknowledge that His works are greater than our understanding.

That’s what we call a miracle.

When the butterflies finally emerged from their chrysalides, our classroom became even busier. Students carefully observed every detail, fed them slices of oranges, mixed sugar water, and watched as their wings slowly strengthened. Every day brought new discoveries as they prepared for the moment when they would be released.

When that special day arrived, both SK classes gathered together to witness the butterflies’ first flight. The butterflies were more than ready to spread their wings and explore the world beyond our classroom. Students gently held them one last time and excitedly followed them with their eyes as they fluttered higher and higher into the sky.

As graduation approaches, I cannot help but notice how closely the butterflies’ journey mirrors the journey of our students.

Just like the caterpillars, our SK students have experienced tremendous growth this year. They have stretched themselves through new learning challenges, worked hard to develop their cursive writing skills, solved problems, built friendships, learned perseverance, and gained confidence. They have lost teeth, grown taller, become more independent, and discovered strengths they didn’t know they had.

There were moments when learning felt difficult. There were moments of waiting, practicing, and trying again. There were moments when growth happened quietly beneath the surface, unseen by others – much like what happens inside a chrysalis.

Yet throughout it all, God was at work.

One of my favourite moments recently was reading the students’ journal reflections about raising and releasing their butterflies. Many shared that while they wished they could keep their butterflies a little longer, they were also happy to know they now had a much bigger space to fly, explore, play, and meet other creatures. Their reflections revealed not only their growing writing skills but also their empathy, understanding, and ability to think beyond themselves. It was a beautiful reminder of how much they have matured this year and how ready they are to spread their own wings.

This Thursday, we will celebrate our SK graduates. It feels impossible that ten months have passed so quickly. While saying goodbye is bittersweet, there is also great joy in knowing they are ready.

Their wings are stronger now.

They are ready to fly into Grade 1. They are ready to embrace new opportunities, tackle new challenges, build new friendships, and discover the next miracles God has prepared for them. What a privilege it has been to witness their journey and watch God’s work unfold in each of their lives.

As we close this chapter, we are reminded of these words from Scripture:

“How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” Psalm 104:24

As we watched our butterflies take flight, we were reminded of the beauty, wisdom, and care woven into all of God’s creation. The same God who designed each caterpillar’s transformation has been faithfully at work in the lives of our students throughout this school year.

May our graduates continue to grow, learn, and soar as they trust in the One who created them, loves them, and guides every step of their journey.
