Since the beginning of the year, our goal has been to help our students develop important social and emotional skills. We are working on recognizing feelings, making positive choices, and practicing calming strategies.
In our classroom, we use the Zones of Regulation to help children understand their feelings and learn healthy ways to manage them. The zones give students a simple, visual way to recognize their emotions and choose strategies that help them stay calm, focused and ready to learn.
Why we use the zones:
- Helps children identify emotions in themselves and others.
- Builds self-regulation skills through age-appropriate strategies.
- Encourages independence, giving students tools to handle big feelings.
- Promotes empathy, understanding that others may be in different zones.
- Creates a common language for talking about emotions in a supportive way.
- Supports positive behaviour, which may lead to smoother transitions and good learning moments.
The center includes soft breathing prompts, fidget tools, stuffed animals and cozy seating. We celebrate when students recognize they need a break and choose to use the calming center independently.

This week in social skills, we focused on listening and following directions. Students enjoyed a variety of related stories, practiced a Listening Lion poem, completed a lion colouring activity and role-played various listening scenarios. They also participated in a small group STEM task: build a tower or structure using plastic cups, popsicle sticks, and blocks that will hold transport vehicles. This activity promotes problem-solving, creativity, and cooperative play.

On Friday, we switched gears and students practiced their scissor skills by making “Scissor Salad”.

We are so proud of our little learners and are blessed to watch each child continue to develop these important skills as we move through the school year.
