Throughout the month of May, our Junior Toddler class has been learning all about community helpers! We explored different roles that are essential to our communities and had so much fun along the way. This month-long unit gave our little learners the chance to discover new helper to focus on each week.
We began our exploration with farmers, learning about the essential role they play in growing the food we eat. The children discovered how much effort goes into planting, growing, and harvesting fruits and vegetables. They especially enjoyed washing vegetables and playing in our pretend garden, where they “planted” seeds and “watered” the soil.

In our second week, we shifted our focus to chefs. The highlight of the week was a special visit from Mrs. Nourse, who came dressed in her chef’s uniform and gave a fun and interactive presentation. Using play dough, she demonstrated how to make cookies, allowing the children to follow along and pretend to bake their own treats!

Next, we turned our attention to firefighters, one of the class’s favourite topics! The children loved dressing up in firefighter gear and enthusiastically took on the role of brave first responders, pretending to put out “fires” around the classroom. This dramatic play encouraged teamwork and an understanding of the importance of safety.

To wrap up the month, we focused on doctors and dentists. The children explored different tools used by medical professionals and had the opportunity to try out each pretend instrument. They practiced caring for baby dolls by checking temperatures, wrapping them in blankets, and even giving check-ups.

May has been a month full of discovery, creativity, and meaningful play. Through hands-on learning and guided exploration, our Junior Toddlers gained a deeper appreciation for the helpers in our community!
